How to Deal with Volcano Mulching Aeration & De-compaction using Air Tools
This customer had multiple planted trees that have had the same treatment for many years prior to our involvement. Mow, mulch, edge. Rinse and repeat. Perfect formula for mulch volcanos that our tree preservation service dealt with on a regular basis. This particular summer, we used air tools for years to aerate, de-compact, re-incorporate, put down granular fertilizer, followed by seasonal liquid blended fertilizer. Since topsoil was already in place, we used that money to budget in granular and liquid bio food. We only lost one out of the whole group and thats because the tree that we were called out for was too far gone. Don't for get to visit www.learntreehab.com and get a copy of our new ebook that talks all about our methods and approaches!

Root Collar Excavation Aeration De-compaction Radial Trenching Earthworms

We did this root collar excavation in a residential neighborhood near Lake Norman, NC. Limited critical root zone. Heritage, established tree over a small out buiding at the back corner of the house. The clients had dry mulch nuggets applied for several seasons. The critical root zone needed to be examined and opened up to air and water. The earthworm population was very healthy in a very small...

    Hello Barry, I have ultra dwarf trees. Peach, plum, Meyer lemon and blood orange. I planted them in large, clay colored plastic pots about 4 years ago. They are still really small. The trees fruit but the fruits grow really small. The lemons usually turn brown and fall off. I use fish / guano emulsion and home made compost for fertilizer and water when the soil looks dry. All on an infrequent scale, nothing to a certain schedule. Also, the Japanese beetles ravage the small fruits. All of this usually happens this time of year in July. The beetles show up now. Even though the beetles eat the small fruit in July, I think the fruit should be much larger by now. Any ideas on what I am doing wrong and how can I keep the pests off the trees without using pesticides? I have seen a burlap mesh material which supposedly keeps the pests out while letting sunlight in. Your thoughts on this?

    Jeesh, I wonder if concrete or asphalt that's run right up to the trunk of a tree would choke it to death too? (Sarcasm!!) Roots gotta breathe and get nutrients...funny how many people don't know that!

    What happens to birds and other wildlife that may try to eat those insects, and for squirrels who make their nests in these oaks how does the treatment affect them? We have several large oaks that need serious help, which is why I’m researching like crazy to see what we may be dealing with prior to getting a CA out for an inspection and estimate.

    I treat my fruit trees like my bonsai trees. Before I plant them I wash all the soil off and comb out the roots around the trunk. Then I plant with the roots complete spread horizontally and in as even of a circle as I can get. Fruit trees are pretty forgiving when it comes to roots, as long as they don’t dry out you can’t really kill em. I just bought a elberta peach to replace the one from 3 years ago that my goats ate… my debit card must have told my Facebook or my cell phone that I bought one today to get a video like this recommended to me…

    Hello Berry, you were doing fine transplanting that peach tree too. You said you were made your own dirt and filling out the pot with dirt. My question is why would you use a terminology like dirt? Do you know that dirt is dead it contains nothing no organisms or anything living in soil contains life has nutrients microorganisms, so please tell me why you were used to terminology dirt as an arborist please

      I suspect it’s a fertilizing, rhizome, compost blend. Great for trees that get planted by builders on relatively thin and poor quality soil.

    Why can't the peach tree be planted for 3-6 months just because you cut the roots? What's the difference between the pot and the ground? And if I have to wait that long then what about my customers that wanting planting? Am I not able to buy the plant or tree from the nursery, cut the roots like you did and plant it right away? How do I go about this with customers?

      Many of the root collars we find during the initial excavation are buried to the point where the dirt has nowhere to go. We have to inform the client that to remove the fill dirt would require a place for the dirt, and often a return trip for specific trees that need addition excavation and aeration.

    • @luvminiwheaties
      @luvminiwheaties 3 місяці тому

       @Earthmasters08 It sounds like your saying if you remove enough dirt, there's no where to put it in the yard without just making a mess of the yard. Is this what your saying? If this is the case, even if you don't remove a lot of dirt, where does it go? With making a hole, it seems the only way to dispose is to just scatter it in the yard or haul it away. I haven't started doing this yet, but I always thought all the dirt you remove you have to haul away. So with that, you'd have to use 1 vehicle for pulling the air spade machine, and another vehicle to pull a trailer to haul the dirt away in to the dumpyard.

    It’s good to know experienced arborists also forget to check roots. Curious though. If peach trees are supposed to be pruned about 1-2 ft up to have an open canopy, what good is buying a tall peach tree. I’m stuck with a 2 yr old tree which I’ll probably have to cut it all the way back because it has the wrong shape. 😏

    I know this is an older post, but I have a couple questions. I could grow peach trees 2 miles away, but not where I am at. Tried several times with bare root. I currently have a desert like micro climate. Is it because it’s too hot and cold? Sandy soil. They generally die off and come from the root and shrub. We installed drip irrigation this year because of drought, but peach already died. This one came with a strange plug for roots-it was weird. Apples, plums, berries are all doing ok. My other issue is a Blaze Maple that was gorgeous 20’ tree and I forgot to cover the trunk in winter and it frost cracked and fell over. Since then it sends up a ton of suckers. I trained one vigorous sucker and it is doing Great, But it still sends up suckers at the base. Is there any way to stop the suckers? Z5a, WI. Crazy weather doesn’t help and this year had late frost after hot weather that broke dormancy and took out a grape and winery lost crop. Thanks for great tips on root bound trees. Sister in law had a locust tree and it was severe. Thank you!

      Hey, I’m from the U.P, Zone 5a as well! Sounds tough over there but we have similar conditions of soil. If it’s been pretty dry, that might be the issue. They can tolerate the sandy soil if it has enough organic matter to feed on, but if it’s too dry the tree might dry out too quickly, too often. How did that second one pan out with drip, and did you ever get a soil test?

    I have a huge oak tree in my front yard. It has anchor roots that run 10 feet from the trunk. They are 10-12” in diameter. Could the tops of these roots be shaved off without damaging the tree or compromising the structure? Since the roots are on the surface they don’t appear to be adding much structural support. There are also a lot of 1-3” roots running along the surface 10-12 feet away from the trunk. They don’t appear to affect the structure. Could those be cut out without damaging the tree? Thanks for a very informative video!

    • @Earthmasters08
      @Earthmasters08 Рік тому

      We have performed root pruning before, but cutting anchors could get tricky. If there is no rot / decay present we generally do not disturb any part of the root. We recommend making a "keep away" mulch skirt and protect as much of the critical root zone as possible. Oaks are typically resilient, but mechanical damage to any of the roots puts it under stress. We were called in to examine a maple that had 50% of its critical root zone scraped off for a circle driveway, and immediately showed signs of severe decline! We typically do not cut roots unless they are strangling / girdling another part of the anchor / collar / stem! Stay safe!
